Candès Receives Waterman Award

Emmanuel Candès, a mathematician at the California Institute of Technology, has received the U.S. National Science Board's Alan T. Waterman Award. Candès was cited for the "development of new mathematical tools that allow efficient digital representation of wave signals, together with his discovery of new methods to translate analog data into a cleaner, tighter digital form---work that promises to improve the digital processing of signals in a vast array of modern technologies."
The award, given to young (35 or under) researchers in any field supported by NSF, carries a three-year, $500,000 grant.
At press time, Candès, the first invited speaker at the SIAM Conference on Imaging Science (May 15–17), delivered what SIAM News sources describe as an outstanding talk ("Imaging by Random Sensing").
